context and challenges

The client is a start-up, which aims to develop a low-power, molten-salt Generation IV reactor, the XAMR (eXtra-small Advanced Modular Reactor). This can be deployed as close as possible to consumers of electrical energy and/or heat, both in France and abroad.

In this context, the client has commissioned Assystem to produce a digital twin, deploy systems engineering methods, produce studies of the prototype reactor's reception centre and support the safety teams in producing studies and defining the safety approach for the safety authority. The final objective is to define a safety strategy adapted to the client's new XAMR reactor, shared with the designers and accepted by the safety authority.

Project Scope

Support for the Safety Department - Project Owner (MOA)

  • Providing expertise to the Safety and Security Department in preparation for meetings with the Nuclear Safety Authority
  • Production of memos to raise alerts and record discussions between all safety stakeholders

Reinforcing the safety team - Project Manager (MOE)

  • Integrated team to carry out the preliminary risk and stress analyses required to draft the notes and files for the Nuclear Safety Authority
  • Steering and supporting the systems in carrying out FMEAs (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis)
  • Handling the digital platform to explore safety applications and import data
  • Supporting the management of all the team's activities (monitoring and achieving KPIs)
  • Providing expertise on proposed design directions and proposals for radiation protection activities (excluding calculations/studies)

Results

  • Defining methods of collaboration, processes and tools with the safety engineering teams to integrate safety rules into 3DX platform applications and design studies
  • Reinforcing and complementing client safety skills thanks to feedback from Assystem's safety teams on other projects
  • Meeting production deadlines for the safety studies required to apply safety principles to system design
