Commercial and Contract Management support for the upgrade of a major rail line
CONTEXT AND CHALLENGES
A major player in the UK rail sector commissioned our teams to provide commercial services support to the Midland Main Line Upgrade, including Kettering to Corby upgrade, Derby remodelling and the London to Corby electrification and capacity upgrade project, delivering more than £1.3bn of capital works over a five-year programme.
The project involved structural improvements, new tracks, drainage and cabling, new signalling, line speed enhancements, station upgrades and platform extensions and increased capacity.
As well as reducing carbon emissions through electrification, the new generation of electric trains are lighter and require less power.
Missions
- Our team provided commercial management support to the client across the Midland Main Line Upgrade, working particularly within the signalling and electrification teams.
- Provision of end-to-end commercial management activities, including input and preparation of delivery and procurement strategies, estimate production, preparation of investment papers to obtain funding, preparation and presentation of internal governance papers, valuation of payment applications, forecasting, change control and final account negotiation.
- Post-contract and pre-contract support, with resources allocated to lead procurement roles to support the tender process, evaluation and award of a £300m electrification contract under the National Electrification Programme Framework.
Client benefits
- Collaborative approach to client/contractor stakeholder management, enabling successful project delivery ready so driver training could commence.
- Use of dedicated, embedded teams to deliver swift, well-informed decision-making and ensure success of hub and spoke project management structure.
- Success on this project resulted in our commercial teams continuing to provide commercial management services to the next phase of electrification of the rail-line north of Kettering and have been further retained within the signalling function to assist on wider portfolio schemes outside of the Midland Main Line Upgrade.
