Executive summary
This document provides an overview of the current state of research on Digital Twins in the energy sector.
Digital Twins are virtual representations of real-world systems that combine modelling, simulation, and real-world data. They have the potential to revolutionize the energy sector by providing smarter, more sustainable, and efficient energy management.
Digital Twins can be used in all phases of complex infrastructure projects, from design to decommissioning, to create value by reducing costs, securing execution times, and increasing the likelihood of achieving the right quality level on the first attempt.
Digital Twins are a promising tool to accelerate the response to the challenge of ensuring massive energy access to populations while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. However, there is currently no consensus definition or implementation method for Digital Twins, and the field is a bustling area of academic and industrial research.
