New commitment will support the introduction of nuclear power in Kazakhstan.

International project management, engineering, and digital services company, Assystem has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Samruk-Kazyna, The National Welfare Fund of Kazakhstan, represented by Mr. Almasadam Satkaliev, CEO, outlining areas for cooperation on the country’s new civil nuclear power programme.

The agreement was signed during an official visit of President Kassym-Jomart Tokaïev of Kazakhstan to Paris on 29th November.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has decided to invest in nuclear power as a low-carbon replacement for fossil fuels to enable the country to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 15% below their 1990 levels by 2030 and to reach carbon neutrality by 2060.

Assystem has a 55-year heritage in developing nuclear power and is experienced at supporting newcomer countries in the development of their programmes. For this MOU, Assystem will   provide the possibility of training personnel and technical advice when creating a nuclear power plant in the country.

Assystem will focus on developing the capability of local teams to enable the evolution of a new skilled eco-system around nuclear in Kazakhstan, which will bring many benefits to Kazakhstan in terms of jobs, the development of academic institutions and the wider economy.

Stéphane Aubarbier, Assystem’s Chief Operating Officer said: “We are delighted to partner Kazakhstan on their energy transition programme. Each country has its own unique energy story, and in Kazakhstan while 70% of its electricity is from its abundant fossil fuel resources, its decision to lower this consumption through the introduction of nuclear power is supported by the country’s large uranium supply and its experience in the management of nuclear fuels.  Nuclear power will be an ideal replacement for coal and gas in the country’s energy mix, bringing a secure and stable supply of low-carbon energy to the grid.”
