In partnership with Rolls-Royce SMR, Assystem got hands on with demonstrating cutting-edge AI applications at its SMR Showcase in Derby on Wednesday 2nd April.

The event was a fantastic opportunity for Assystem to demonstrate its expertise in digital integration, helping clients enhance and accelerate their energy transition ambitions through improved project delivery solutions.

The in-person event, held at Pride Park in Derby, brought together nuclear and digital experts from across the industry to engage, listen and think about the value that AI applications can bring to the nuclear industry; including technology such as large language models, machine learning and machine vision systems.

The Showcase came at a critical time. With the growing demand for digital infrastructure, the increasing energy demands through data centre development requires easily deployable, low-carbon and reliable energy solutions that can support the world’s rising energy demands.

The event also offered industry stakeholders an exciting opportunity to see firsthand how AI deployment can help deliver on the next generation of low-carbon, domestic clean energy supplies. Not only did the demos illustrate how digital innovation is crucial to growing talent, training and skills across the UK’s nuclear new build programme but also provided nuclear leaders with more efficient solutions to complex engineering problems.

Highlighting Holoreka technology

Alongside technology exhibitions from various trusted partners, Assystem showcased its proprietary Holoreka technology; a standalone augmented reality solution designed for maintenance and control operations, which allows users to visualise and test control equipment or industrial installations in real time.

As well as other Assystem technology demo’s that took place on the day, Holoreka provided industry experts with an opportunity to improve industrial performance by assisting interventions on site.

Introducing industry partners

With the explosion in artificial intelligence technology, Assystem are well positioned to work with new technology vendors to create value in the nuclear sector. The event featured two vendors, the Exeter based digiLab, who are working on the cutting edge of fusion energy with their Twinlab platform, and Mind Foundry, who are making strides in applying artificial intelligence to civil infrastructure. The teams in the workshop used agentic AI tools created by projecting success to help them develop their ideas into practical working solutions that can accelerate design timescales and enhance the operations of small modular reactors.

SMR technology has immense potential to support the growing demand for digital applications globally. This collaborative event provided an engaging platform for industry leaders to highlight the power that AI and machine learning play in progressing innovation in the nuclear sector. Indeed, as AI becomes increasingly energy hungry it requires smart, efficient and easily deployable engineering solutions that can deliver affordable, reliable and clean energy supplies worldwide. It’s exciting to be leading the charge in turning nuclear innovations into real-world opportunities.
