Our activities in India
India committed at COP21 to reducing the carbon intensity of its GDP to 35% by 2030 compared to 2005 and aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2070. To meet rising energy demand, lower carbon emissions, and ensure energy independence, the Indian government wants to triple the size of its nuclear fleet. Nuclear power capacity is expected to grow from 7 GW in 2022 to 25 GW in 2040. India is also relying on renewable energy to massively increase its low-carbon electricity production capacity.
Assystem has already been involved in numerous projects such as the preliminary studies for the future EPR nuclear reactors in India and the management of a major hydroelectric project in Kashmir.
India's rail network, one of the largest in the world, is also a key element in reducing the country's carbon footprint. The Indian government wants to decarbonise and electrify its entire rail network by 2030. In addition, a national plan aims to connect the major cities in northern, western and southern India by high-speed trains. Assystem is supporting India's railway development ambitions and is involved in numerous infrastructure projects.
Assystem employs more than 1,500 engineers in India who support the country's major industrial firms in a wide range of sectors, including low-carbon energy (particularly nuclear and electricity networks), transportation (especially railways), urban planning and water development. With its head office in Delhi and seven other agencies, Assystem is present in most regions of India.
To drive Assystem's ambitious growth in India and following the acquisition of STUP (in 2021) and L&T Infrastructure Engineering Limited (in 2024), Assystem has brought together all its India-based businesses under the single Assystem in India brand since 2025. In parallel, Assystem retains its subsidiary RELSAFE, an international nuclear safety consultancy acquired at the end of 2023.
