Job Description

🚀 The Job Mission: Safety Engineer – Radiological Protection

We are looking for a Safety Engineer – Radiological Protection to support radiological oversight and assurance at Hinkley Point C (HPC). This role primarily involves preparing and executing industrial radiography activities, managing radioactive sources, and ensuring compliance with UK radiation safety regulations.

You will work closely with radiography teams to verify correct safety protocols, monitor radiation levels, and ensure the highest standards of barrier control and compliance.

 

Key Responsibilities

Industrial Radiography Support & Radiation Monitoring:

  • Oversee and verify the setup of radiography barriers, ensuring compliance with site procedures.
  • Perform radiation monitoring at designated barriers during source exposure.
  • Ensure all radioactive sources and equipment are correctly removed after operations.
  • Generate and maintain compliance records.
  • Use the Permit to Work system to control radiography activities.
  • Conduct radiation monitoring in the event of a radiological incident.

Management of Radioactive Source Storage & Inventory:

  • Maintain an accurate inventory of radioactive sources stored at HPC.
  • Receive, dispatch, and log radiography sources, ensuring full regulatory compliance.
  • Oversee the secure storage of radioactive sources and ensure all paperwork is completed.
  • Perform routine radiation and contamination surveys of the storage facility.
  • Conduct periodic inventory checks to ensure proper source tracking.
  • Liaise with the Approved Dosimetry Service for legal dosimetry storage and issue.
  • Ensure Radiation Protection instruments & dosimeters are correctly stored, repaired, and calibrated.

My profile

🛠 Required Skills & Qualifications

Essential:

  • GCSE Grade C or equivalent in Maths and English.
  • City & Guilds in Radiation Protection Grade I (or equivalent).
  • Minimum 3 years’ experience as a Radiation Protection Technician (RPT) / Health Physics Monitor.
  • Strong knowledge of the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17).
  • Competent IT skills and ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of IRR17 to be eligible for Radiation Protection Supervisor (RPS) appointment.

Desirable:

  • Level 2 qualification in Radiological Protection / Health Physics Monitoring (e.g., City & Guilds Stage 2, NVQ Level 2 Diploma, Level 2 Underpinning Knowledge Certificate).
  • Experience in radiation monitoring during industrial radiography.
  • Previous experience working on a nuclear licensed site.
  • Experience managing radioactive source inventories and radiation detection instruments.
  • Previous experience in shift work.
