The Assystem Safety & Risk business unit has over 20 years’ experience, delivering bespoke, high-quality safety, risk, and reliability consultancy services to high-hazard industries. We help our clients to minimise risk, delivering improved safety and security and fostering a nuclear safety and risk aware culture. Assystem Safety & Risk delivers an integrated and cost-effective service that includes Safety Case, Human & Organisational Factors (HOF), Risk & Reliability (Including Probabilistic Safety Assessment), Security & Resilience, and Process Safety.
We use deterministic and probabilistic techniques to help our clients to assess the risk associated with facilities and activities and confirm that risks are reduced to a level that is As Low as Reasonably Practicable (ALARP).
Job Description
The Lead Safety Case Engineer is required to provide safety case strategy support to the our client’s project portfolio. This is a key role in which the Lead Safety Case Engineer will ensure that all stakeholders maintain a strong nuclear safety culture while developing the safety case strategy. The Lead Safety Case Engineer will deploy defence and other relevant standards while incorporating industry good practice to the development of the Project safety case strategy and relevant development activities.
Responsibilities:
Ensure that project Safety Management Arrangements (SMAs) are in place and provide assurance that:
🛠️ The proposed engineered solution and safety justification satisfy the client’s requirements, and Critical Safety Functions (CSFs) and Operational Safety Functions (OSFs) are delivered.
📄 Produce safety documentation in accordance with the agreed Safety Justification Plan (SJP) and relevant Safety Management Arrangements (SMAs).
📚 Ensure safety documentation is consistent with current industry good practice and legislative and regulatory requirements, including but not limited to:
📑 ONR/DNSR Technical Assessment Guides (TAGs)
🔍 Technical Inspection Guides (TIGs)
🛡️ Safety Assessment Principles (SAPs)
📘 NRPA Level 4 Methodologies.
🧩 Carry out Design Substantiation that provides the evidence layers to the Claims and Arguments within Nuclear Safety Cases.
🏗️ Define the requirements of the NRP/NW Design Intent in terms of Nuclear Safety and Operational Functional Requirements (SFRs and OFRs), ensuring the Design Substantiation of Systems, Structures, & Components (SSCs) meets these requirements.
⚙️ Ensure Operating Conditions & Limits (OCLs), Operating Rules (ORs), and Operating Instructions (OIs) are defined and met by the design suite.
🛠️ Ensure Construction and Commissioning requirements are appropriate, clearly identified, and that risks are appropriately managed.
🔧 Confirm that Installation/Implementation procedures reflect the requirements of the safety justification and align with current industry good practice, legislative, and regulatory requirements.
🧪 Demonstrate that Commissioning activities comply with the safety case and design intent requirements.
My profile
🎓 Qualification to degree level in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline.
🏅 Chartered Engineer status or ability to attain chartered status (demonstration of continued professional development).
⚙️ Proven experience in safety case management and delivery within an operational and highly regulated environment; project delivery within a naval base environment is preferable.
