Assystem, along with other European companies, officially created the European Fusion Association (EFA) in Brussels in September 2024. This initiative aims to promote innovation and collaboration in the fusion energy sector, accelerating the transition from research to large-scale industrial applications.

Objectives of the European Fusion Association

The main objective of the EFA is to accelerate the transition of nuclear fusion from research laboratories to large-scale industrial applications. To achieve this, the association promotes enhanced cooperation between industrial, scientific, political and financial players to transform nuclear fusion into a sustainable energy source for Europe. It also aims to establish a framework for collaboration that will meet the technical challenges and stimulate the necessary investment.

Assystem, a key player in nuclear fusion

Assystem has been actively involved in international fusion energy projects for over 30 years. Today, Assystem is recognised as a key player in the field of fusion, thanks to its long-term positions in the design, construction and management of major projects such as ITER and STEP (UKAEA). Assystem also plays an active role in the international scientific community known as “Big Science”.

In addition to its involvement with the EFA, Assystem is also a founding member of the UK Fusion Industry Taskforce, in collaboration with the UK government.

The main challenge for nuclear fusion is to move from the research phase to large-scale electricity production. This new European Association is a major step forward, providing the necessary impetus for the growth of fusion energy across Europe. With significant investment and a well-established supply chain, we believe that Europe is well positioned to keep leading the development of fusion technology to make it a key pillar of our future energy system
